What is CBD
As a pet owner, you may be tired of giving expensive pharmaceuticals to your dog with never-ending vet bills to alleviate discomfort, anxiety, or other ailments. Most dogs during their lifetime will experience some form of health condition, whether it be anxiety, mobility issues, chronic discomfort, or other problems that often require extensive vet visits and come with loads of prescription medications. Many pharmaceuticals come with adverse effects on dogs, and a lot of the time, it is hard to gauge if they are effective.
But what are CBD dog supplements? How do they work, and are they safe for my dog? These questions come up for every pet parent. PetFX has gathered the information you need to be informed about using CBD for pets as a natural pharmaceutical alternative.
Where does hemp come from?
CBD, short for cannabidiol, is a compound found in hemp plants. It is a popular supplement because it interacts with receptors that keep the body balanced and running normally. Hemp is not marijuana, and marijuana is not hemp. This fact is one of the most important to know and share because most of the time, people are unaware that they are different.
Often, people believe that hemp is the male plant of marijuana. This statement is false. Hemp and marijuana are both classified as cannabis, but they are entirely different varieties of cannabis species. Hemp differs from marijuana in all aspects: function, cultivation, and application.
What is a Terpene?
Terpenes are aromatic compounds found in many plants and are not specific to cannabis. Many people commonly associate terpenes with cannabis because cannabis plants contain high concentrations. Terpenes can also be found in things such as oranges, lemons, hops, bay leaves, black pepper, and lavender, to name a few. These aromatic compounds create the characteristic scent of many plants.
What is an Endocannabinoid System?
The endocannabinoid system (ECS) is a set of signaling molecules in the central and peripheral nervous system that helps regulate functions such as appetite, pain, mood, and memory. A signaling molecule is a chemical that passes information from cell to cell. In the endocannabinoid system, these molecules mainly signal lipids called endocannabinoids. An endocannabinoid is a fatty molecule that binds the receptor proteins to trigger a response.
The chemical makeup of an endocannabinoid and the responses it may elicit are mimicked closely by the botanical compounds called cannabinoids. This similarity is why cannabinoids get prescribed to trigger an increase in appetite, lessen pain, and uplift your mood.
The Endocannabinoid System in Dogs
The endocannabinoid system consists of CB1 and CB2 receptors commonly found within the primary nervous system. Just like humans, dogs have CB1 and CB2 receptors in their bodies. CB1 receptors are in and around the spinal cord and brain and assist with regulation – from storing memories and suppressing hunger to expressing moods and registering an appetite. CB2 receptors are primarily situated in the immune system, though some are located in the nervous system. CB2 plays a role in parts of the brain, the immune system, skin, bones, and spleen.
How does CBD play a role in the endocannabinoid system?
CBD fits like a lock and key into these CB1 and CB2 receptors, serving specific functions in the health and well-being of your pet. These receptors are responsible for processing cannabinoid compounds and work together to regulate bodily functions from muscle improvement to digestive tract functions and mood regulation. Cannabinoids influence certain parts of your dog’s brain, and from the brainstem up, they can alter the function of many parts of the brain.
CB2 receptors are more involved in processing CBD oils and are activated when your pet ingests CBD pet products. They work hard to bring your dog’s body to a place of calmness, and once CB2 receptors bind to the CBD molecules, your dog’s immune system immediately improves. There will also be a significant decrease in inflammatory symptoms, and your dog will become more physically able and active.
What are CBD dog supplements
Have you ever been frustrated when the CBD-infused product you purchased for your dog doesn’t seem to work? It could be because of the product’s low bioavailability. Bioavailability means the extent an active ingredient, such as CBD, is absorbed from a substance and becomes available for the body to use.
After an object enters the liver, most of it becomes broken down, diminishing its effect. The liver acts as a filter for most substances entering the body; when the product consumed doesn’t have a system to eliminate or reduce the damage from first-pass metabolism, the product is not as effective.
Luckily, our team developed a unique system; our patented Enteric Coating and Taurinol® work together to reduce the damage from first-pass metabolism. This reduction means that our nutrients are more bioavailable than the competition. We have more effective CBD supplements because they have more bioavailability than other products, so the product reaches the system without being broken down by the liver. We have scientifically proven results supported by multiple patents exclusive to our brand.
