Dog Anxiety: Causes, Signs and Solutions
Whether it’s anxiety due to separation, trauma from puphood, or aging, all dogs can experience it at some point in their life. Anxiety comes with a lot of questions - How did it develop? What are the signs? How can you treat it? Keep reading to find the answers.
Causes of Anxiety
There are many symptoms we can use to diagnose dog anxiety (as laid out below), but they can’t talk to us verbally...So we’ve laid out some of the scenarios that can influence your dog’s behavior.
This is one of the most common reasons for anxiety in dogs. Smaller dogs, in particular, have a tendency to get separation anxiety from their owners. If they start to act up when you leave the home, pack a suitcase to go on a trip or you are leaving them with a friend, they are probably thinking that you are leaving them for good and they act more stressed because of this. Larger dogs can also experience separation anxiety, especially if they’ve had a traumatic past. Some dogs express this distress by urinating in the home while you are away, even if they’re potty trained.
Adjusting to a new environment
Especially in a dog’s early years, it’s common to see anxiety or stress patterns while getting acclimated to new spaces. Think about it - as humans, we too need time & resources to help transition us into a new home, move to a new state or environment, dogs are the same.
Older dogs tend to get more comfortable in their home the more time they spend there, but can experience severe anxiety due to re-homing, or adjusting to being rescued/formally homeless.
Especially during loud thunderstorms or on holidays with fireworks (the Fourth of July), many dogs experience anxiety from high-volume stimulation. This can be situational and happen less frequently, so knowing when to prevent the impact can help your dog tremendously. See preventative measures you can take below.
Sometimes, we don’t know the cause of anxiety and have trouble figuring out what caused the abnormal behavior. We’ve laid out some of the signs you can attribute to your dog being anxious:
- Pacing/panting frequently
- Lack of appetite
- Hiding or cowering in a corner
- Excessive licking
- Destructive behavior
There are a lot of anti-anxiety remedies on the market today, but our team at PetFX created an entire brand specifically with the need for calming solutions in mind. While the majority of our CannaLove™ products contain stress and calming agents, our doctor-formulated CannaLove™ CBD K-9 Support Soft Chews are the perfect dietary supplement to aid in relieving your dog’s stress and anxiety.
Using proprietary patented technology, the secret is an enteric coating that allows for higher absorption of active ingredients as they travel through their digestive system. The coating protects them from premature digestion from enzymes and stomach acids - i.e. more of the good stuff makes it to their stomach :). Containing naturally active ingredients, these beef-flavored chews each contain 2mg of Cannabidiol (CBD) made from non-psychoactive hemp that effectively reaches their digestive system for relief.
Also, moisturize the stress away with our CannaLove™ Anxiety Relief Shampoo - it’s a great starting point for your stressed-out pups. PRO TIP: get our Anxiety Relief Bundle now! Want to learn more? Contact email@example.com for more information or visit www.pet-fx.com today.
